We're excited to announce our collaboration with Vellum to make our embedded edges even more accessible and affordable to indie authors!
Key Points:
What does this mean for authors?
In short—more control, faster service, lower prices.
Authors who opt for Vellum-compatible design files (as opposed to in-house application) will receive easy and clear instructions on how to apply their edges within Vellum's new borders and backgrounds function. This means when you spot those sneaky little typos that somehow always make it to the final version, you don't have to wait for us to reapply your design to a new PDF, nor will you have to pay a revision fee each time!
What if I don't have a Vellum license / a Mac?
The Vellum program is only compatible with Macs. If you've considered investing in a Mac solely to use Vellum, now might just be the time. The owner of Painted Wings bought her first Mac (an ancient, refurbished thing) specifically for this Vellum collaboration!
Once you have a Mac, you need Vellum Press (edges only work on print books, so the ebook version doesn't work for this). If you need a license, you can purchase one here. (*referral link)
No desire to use a Mac/Vellum? No problem! All of our designs are still able to be applied by us in-house.
How do I order Vellum-compatible files?
If you want instant download files, we have 50 different designs available to grab from our online shop—solids & ombres in our most common trim sizes. These are now our most affordable option, as low as $16.67/title! (We've had great feedback on these already!)
If you want to peruse our new premade designs (not simple solid/ombres), we have just added over 150 options to our online shop. Not only are our new premade designs optimized for Vellum's functionality, but having them in our online shop allows you to snatch up a design at any time, even if you're not ready to apply it. Once you've paid for the listing, you've placed your deposit and claimed it so no one else can grab it.
You can now mark whether you'd prefer a Vellum-compatible file or in-house application when you request a quote through our inquiry forms.
BYOD Edges (‘Bring Your Own Design’)
If I've ordered edges from you before, can I have those converted to Vellum-compatible files?
Yes! Using this form, let us know what titles you'd like us to work on. Most designs can be converted, and we're allowing minor alterations if you've found you'd like something to be changed.
How does this affect licensing/pricing?
Our licensing and process in many ways will remain the same, but we have given our pricing a lot of thought. Overall, you'll find our rates more budget friendly.
A few examples include:
—our instant downloads (now, the most affordable option!)
—lower revision fees for in-house applications
—low, flat pricing for custom solid & ombre edges
—lower pricing for books with higher page counts
—lower and more clear pricing for additional titles (using the same design on more than 1 book)
—deeper discounts on both premade edges & BYOD edges
—lower rush order pricing

Would we say no? Never. We're always working on something new and exciting. Specifically related to this Vellum update, we'll have additional announcements soon, things we'd hoped to have ready in time for this newsletter but are taking a smidge longer.
